Chapter 18.8 - June 2024 - Escaping the clutch... and gravity - part II

"You know, on the way back I got to thinking that maybe we should reward ourselves with a vacation for once" mom said as we walked up towards our house. "What do you say? How does Egypt sound?"

"Yeah mom, sure." I replied, being a little surprised that mom actually suggested we go on vacation! "That sounds like fun. We've never really gone anywhere before, I think we would deserve some time away to relax and stuff. We just have to convince dad to come along with us."

"Oh yeah, well, I have my ways. I'm sure he'll love it. It'll be a great opportunity for him to meet new people, and maybe even connect with politicians from abroad. You know, networking and all that." mom said, sounding very sure that dad would come along. I wasn't fully convinced, but even if it would be only me and mom going, I'm sure it would be lots of fun.

"Not to mention all the new food we could be trying out. I've heard they have some pretty good sandwiches, like, uh, shawarma I think they call them." she continued.

"Yeah, sandwiches.. that's... great mom" I said, trying to sound enthusiastic. I don't really know anything about Egyptian food, but I'm willing to be that sandwiches probably isn't the best they have to offer, but.. I don't know. Maybe mom knows something I don't... and just as we, or well, mom was talking about sandwiches dad came in through the door greeting us with his usual grin. He must have had a good day at the office I guess.

Mom followed dad upstairs, and either they were gonna have some romantic movie night, or.. do their favourite thing to spend the night working on each their computer together.. Well, whatever.. I wasn't gonna spend the evening with them. I wanted to go bowling or something more fun, so I called my boyfriend Robert to meet up at the bowling alley.

So yeah, about those downhills.. boy, I think being a taxi driver isn't going to be a career for me! I have never thought about it before, but that hill from the bowling alley and towards the beach is just incredibly steep! It's crazy! I'm only happy the taxi had good breaks!

Robert wasn't there when I got out of he taxi, and Ididn't see him anywhere inside, so I was left standing in the rain waiting for him... when he finally showed up, after maybe 10 minutes, he started talking about this song called "Astronaut" he had been listening to all week. His fascination with outer space, the stars and planets and all things fantastic and out of this world is just endless.

Maybe one day we could both be austronauts, visiting new planets. Maybe we could be the first settlers on Mars and be the king and queen of our own colony.. He's certainly got a vivid imagination, and it's easy to get carried away by his enthusiasm.

Me, personally, I would probably want to aim for something more realistic and down to earth. Our world is already pretty broken.. and I think we should fix it first, before establishing new ones.. but then again, his ideas do sound exciting.

..and the stars are pretty romantic, after all.. He's got stars in his eyes, definately.

We talked some more about school, and of course, his other favourite subject geography. Anything that teaches him about the different and far away places..

Well, enough talk. I wanted to get inside and do what I wanted to do, beat him in a game of bowling. I went straight for it, while he went over to the counter to get something to drink. Someone had asked the bartender to turn off the lights and the music, because they wanted to tell a ghost story. It's such a lame thing to do...

After a while I got impatient. I didn't come there to play alone or to stand there waiting, so I shouted for him to come over.. We could have something to drink afterwards if we got thirsty.

Next thing I knew, he was in a fight with this army guy! I really don't know what happened, if he was bumped into or if he said something in passing! I know Robert can be a little unpredictable so to speak, but I have never seen him get into a fight before!

This wasn't what I expected or hoped for when I thought I wanted some action! There must have been something happening here to lead to this, and I'm not saying I support fighting or beating people up, but he probably had it coming! I'll have to admit, this made me a little proud! That's my boy, bringing justice to those who deserve it!

Don't think Robert could ever be a politician or a prison warden like dad, though. He's to much of a vigilante for that.. he's probably better off being an astronaut, definately. And I'll be the president! The first female outer space astro-president! That's gonna make mom and dad proud!

"Hey! You should, by the way, totally join us for our vacation to Egypt! Mom said we'd be going earlier today!" I told him. Egypt might not be as exciting as going to a different planet, but it's a start. It's not like tourist trips to space are available just yet, but maybe in 10 or 20 years it will be!

"Oh, that'd be awesome!" he said, being all enthusiastic and stuff. "When are you guys going? You think they got poisonous snakes and spiders there or something?"

"I don't know, but probably! And alligators or crocodiles, I bet they got really big crocodiles! Hiding in the lakes and rivers, ready to be wrestled like Steve Irwin!" I said, wanting to encourage him more.

"That's a really cool idea, and in the evening we could go out into the desert and ride scooters into the sunset before watching the stars! And then we could have scorpions and spiders crawling all over us!" he said, and he was totally into it now. We just needed to tell our parents and get our backs packed!

"..but why wait until we get to Egypt to watch the stars? When we can do it right now?" he asked. Well, maybe because right now it was raining outside, but whatever. We could always pretend, and that's excactly what we did!

"Look! That's the milky way, can you see it?" he said, pointing up towards the overcast sky...

"Yes, yes, I can! Clear as the night sky, sir!" I said, while doing my best impression of some British explorer or something. "And that's Sirius, I can see it, bright as day!"
"Oh, indeed it is madame!" he giggled before pretending to take a sip from a cup of tea. "Indeed it is. The gravity of this situation is... very serious!" he said, "Right there in Canis Major, that old dog!"

"And just to the south there, that's Orion isn't it?" I said and pointed towards the same rain cloud as earlier.. I had never thought that I would be so nerdy as to sit at home and memorize all the stars and constellations in the night sky, but since it was so fascinating to him, I kinda had to keep up.

"You are correct, three stars to you, young madame!" he said, delivering another joke that almost went above my head for a few seconds... like a meteor.. and so we continued for a while, throwing puns back and forth, each one dumber than the one before it...

I would've liked to just stay out forever, especially if it hadn't been raining, since we were having such a steller time (last one, I swear), but curfew was almost up and I kinda knew I had to be home in time. I made one last promise to ask mom or dad if he could go with us on our trip to Egypt, before I gave him a warm hug, and then I had to dash off..

---

Mom was already in bed when I got home, and dad was as usual busy working on something, so I probably could've stayed out longer. He didn't even look up from his computer when I told him good night. It was probably for the better I didn't push my luck to hard though either way..

..and one day, we wouldn't just be sitting pointing at stars. We would be among them. Good night...
